What is a consultancy practice and what value does it bring to clients?

A consultancy practice—like Consult With Shea, P.C.—focuses on consulting with people. This means listening and providing advice and guidance that will help people move forward with greater peace of mind and confidence. Things come up in everyday life that make people say, “I just want talk to an attorney.”
In many cases, people cannot get appointments with attorneys as soon as they would like. And in certain cases, attorneys do not want to meet with a person because they don’t see the person’s problems fitting into their practice model beyond an initial meeting. For example, someone may only want to talk about whether they have liability or not in a certain situation, but they are not ready or do not want to hire an attorney to handle the problem at that point. Or they may just want to discuss how to structure and start a business, but they don’t intend to hire an attorney to actually do the work of forming the business because they cannot afford it, or they simply want to do it themselves.
In a consultancy practice, there are no barriers to getting an appointment and talking to an attorney so long as the topic of consultation fits within the scope of the consultancy practice.
Because a consultancy practice focuses on consultations and does only very limited and specific document preparation or work beyond consultations, clients do not need to worry about the attorney’s financial interest in recommending a particular course of action. There is no bias toward recommending that a client pursue particular services because there is no benefit to doing so.
Additionally, a consulting attorney like Shea may feel less inclined to recommend to clients that they pursue legal services beyond the initial consultation. An attorney who focuses on consultations may see things differently than an attorney in traditional practice. Because a consultancy practice is not a “hammer” in the same way as a traditional legal practice, not every problem is a “nail.” In a consultancy practice, the possible solutions for people’s problems range beyond traditional legal approaches to problem-solving. That said, if a client will benefit from a more traditional legal approach to problem solving, nothing prevents a consulting attorney from referring the person to a more traditional law firm for those services.
